Major topics include: Internet history, structure,protocols and Internet applications, intranet and extranet, virtual private networks, the World WideWeb, payment systems, security, public key infrastructure, etc.Prerequisite: CSIS0911This course is for non-Engineering students only.CSIS0925.Business information systems (6 credits)Fundamental principles <strong>of</strong> Management Information Systems are covered. Topics include: organisationaland technical foundations <strong>of</strong> Information Systems (IS); survey <strong>of</strong> computer-based IS; management <strong>of</strong> ISresources; IS requirement analysis and design; database management; telecommunications; end usercomputing. Special emphasis is paid to the Internet as a foundation for new business models andprocesses.Prerequisite: CSIS0911This course is for non-Engineering students only.CSIS0926.Information technology and society (6 credits)This course discusses the social impacts and implications <strong>of</strong> and legal issues related to informationtechnology. Major topics include: historical and social contexts <strong>of</strong> computing, risks and liabilities <strong>of</strong>safety-critical systems, philosophical foundations <strong>of</strong> ethics, computer crime, intellectual property,privacy and civil liberties, economic issues in computing, implications <strong>of</strong> the Internet, etc.Prerequisite: CSIS0911This course is for non-Engineering students only.ECONOMICS AND FINANCEExaminations, Coursework Assessment, Prerequisites and CombinationsFirst YearThree courses are <strong>of</strong>fered by the School <strong>of</strong> Economics and Finance for first year students: Introductionto economics I, Introduction to economics II, and Analysis <strong>of</strong> economic data. Although A-levelmathematics is not a prerequisite and calculus is not used, a strong mathematics background isrecommended for students to cope with the requirements <strong>of</strong> these courses.
