313PSYC0048.Graphonomics and graphonomic therapy (6 credits)This course examines the psychological dimensions underlying the behaviour <strong>of</strong> handwriting and drawing,including perception, cognition and motor theory. It provides an introduction to scientific analysis, inboth theory and practice, linking therapeutic applications to expressive graphic activities.Prerequisite : PSYC1001 or (PSYC1002 & PSYC1003).PSYC0050.Knowing and acting in everyday life (6 credits)This course investigates knowing and acting as an integral process by which we construct ourexperiences and interact with the world to maintain our well-being. Pragmatic approaches toknowledge ranging from Western empiricism to postmodern constructionism. Taoism and Buddhismare introduced. Students are encouraged to practice what they have learned by becoming more aware <strong>of</strong>their own acts <strong>of</strong> knowing and their consequences in everyday life. Projects and tutorial discussions aredesigned to aid this practice.PSYC0051.Perception (6 credits)To provide an introduction to sensation and perception, with an emphasis on the visual system as amodel perceptual system. Specific topics will include the following examination <strong>of</strong> the functionalproperties <strong>of</strong> sensory systems (e.g., auditory system, colour vision, vestibular system, touch, andkinaesthesia); phenomenology <strong>of</strong> sensation and perception; psychophysical limits <strong>of</strong> perceptualsystems; goals <strong>of</strong> sensory coding; structure and evolution <strong>of</strong> sensory systems. Psychophysicalexperiments will be conducted by students in laboratory sessions.Prerequisite: PSYC1001 or PSYC1002.PSYC0052.Advanced social psychology (6 credits)This course provides an in-depth examination <strong>of</strong> two classic questions in personality and socialpsychology: What is social about social psychology? and Where is the person in personalitypsychology? By integrating research findings from experimental psychology, individual differencespsychology and social psychology, this course seeks an integrative understanding <strong>of</strong> how an individualbehaves in a social context. Topics include: person-situation interactions; interpersonal perception;stereotyping; intergroup dynamics; achievement motivation; psychology <strong>of</strong> the self; language use andinterpersonal processes; cultural influences on cognition and behaviour.Assessment: 70% coursework, 30% examination.Prerequisites: [PSYC1001 or (PSYC1002 & PSYC1003)], and (PSYC0019 or PSYC0020).PSYC0053.Advanced research in industrial/organizational psychology (6 credits)This research-based course focuses on specific topics in industrial/organizational psychology that arepertinent to the latest economic development In <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> and in the Greater China Region.Psychometric assessment <strong>of</strong> various job attitudes, aptitudes, and work-related personality will be onesuch topic. Students will develop their knowledge and hands-on skills in selected areas covered in theintroductory courses <strong>of</strong> Industrial Psychology and Organizational Psychology.Assessment: 75% coursework, 25% examination.Prerequisites: PSYC0033 or PSYC0044 or Head’s permission.
