Independent research project (6 credits)Students with a focus <strong>of</strong> interest and the approval <strong>of</strong> a teacher may undertake independent study toproduce a research paper under the supervision <strong>of</strong> a teacher.Assessment: 100% coursework.GEOGRAPHY<strong>The</strong> prerequisite for admission to courses in the Department <strong>of</strong> Geography for <strong>Arts</strong> students isordinarily a pass in geography at the Advanced Level, or a good pass in geography at the AdvancedSupplementary Level. <strong>The</strong> academic requirement, however, may be waived by the Head <strong>of</strong> Departmentin special cases.First Year<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong>fers a new Geography undergraduate curriculum which is designed to assist thestudents in learning and understanding geographical and environmental-related knowledge and issueswithin a modern context and perspective. Details on updated course descriptions are available from ourwebsite: http://geog.hku.hk/.<strong>The</strong> first-year Level 100 Geography courses are taught in the form <strong>of</strong> lectures, discussion classes,fieldwork and practical classes. Each course will be examined by one two-hour written paper at the end<strong>of</strong> the semester in which the course is taught.<strong>The</strong> basic aim <strong>of</strong> the courses is to provide students who intend to major or otherwise in Geography intheir second and third years with a general environmental-geography background and an introduction togeographical methods <strong>of</strong> inquiry, with a focus on China and the Asia-Pacific region.First-year students intending to major in Geography in the second- and third-years are required to takeat least two Level 100 courses (i.e. a minimum <strong>of</strong> 12 credits), and are strongly recommended to take 3-5courses in order to have a wider basic knowledge for their second- and third-year studies.GEOG1002.<strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>: land, people and resources (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course provides students with a fundamental understanding <strong>of</strong> the physical and humanenvironment <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> with its larger geographical and regional setting. After an introduction tothe major physical features, a range <strong>of</strong> contemporary issues such as demographic structure and changes,economic development, industrialization, urbanization, housing and planning will be examined. It willconclude with a discussion on <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>'s future development problems and their possible solutions.This is an independent course which can be taken by students from various disciplines.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.
