100Second and Third Year CoursesCHIN2121.Prose up to the nineteenth century (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)A study <strong>of</strong> Chinese prose in its various forms and styles conducted through an examination <strong>of</strong>specimens taken from the most representative as well as best known authors. Students taking thiscourse are expected to gain a sound knowledge <strong>of</strong> the development and characteristics <strong>of</strong> Chinese prosefrom the pre-Qin period to the end <strong>of</strong> the Qing period.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.CHIN2122.Prose: selected writers (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)A detailed study <strong>of</strong> the prose <strong>of</strong> one or two <strong>of</strong> the following: Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan, Ouyang Xiu,Wang Anshi and Su Shi. Students taking this course are expected to demonstrate a sound knowledge <strong>of</strong>the prose works covered and a general ability to describe and analyse prose styles.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.CHIN2123.Shi poetry up to the nineteenth century (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)A study <strong>of</strong> Chinese shi poetry in its various forms and styles conducted through an examination <strong>of</strong>specimens taken from the most representative as well as best known authors. Students taking this course areexpected to show in the examination a sound knowledge <strong>of</strong> the shi poetry covered and a general abilityto describe and analyse poetic styles.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.CHIN2125.Ci poetry up to the nineteenth century (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)A general survey <strong>of</strong> the ci poetry from its beginning in the Tang period to the Qing period, with specialemphasis on the Song period, which is considered the golden age in the history <strong>of</strong> this literary genre.Students taking this course are expected to gain a sound knowledge <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> the ci poetryfrom the eighth century to the nineteenth century. Its various forms and styles are examined throughspecimens taken from the most representative as well as best known authors.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.
