Except with the permission <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> Department,this course is available only to students taking a major in music.Assessment for each seminar will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (60%) and an examination (40%).MUSI3007. III.7 <strong>University</strong> choir 2 (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course, which is open to all third-year students, focuses on musical performance. Studentsparticipate in weekly rehearsals with the Department's <strong>University</strong> Choir over two semesters.Assessment will be based on participation and a practical examination.MUSI3008. III.8 <strong>University</strong> gamelan 2 (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course, which is open to all third-year students, focuses on musical performance. Studentsparticipate in weekly rehearsals with the <strong>University</strong> Gamelan over two semesters.Assessment will be based on participation and a practical examination.MUSI3011. III.9 Chinese music performance 2 (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)Students may choose to enroll in the Cantonese Opera Workshop or take individual instrumentalinstruction with a teacher associated with the Department. Beginners are welcome, but places in thiscourse are limited, especially for individual instrumental instruction. Except with the permission <strong>of</strong> theHead <strong>of</strong> Department, Chinese Music Performance 2 is open only to majors in music.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (100%).MUSI3012. III.10 Orchestral studies and techniques 3 (for students in their thirdyear <strong>of</strong> study) (3 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)Students participate in weekly rehearsals and performances with the <strong>University</strong>'s orchestra over twosemesters. Besides musical skills, this course focuses on teamwork, discipline and creativity. To gainadmission to the course, students must have reached the standard <strong>of</strong> ABRSM Grade 6 or the equivalenton one <strong>of</strong> the following: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, violin,viola, cello or double bass and must pass an audition. Orchestral Studies and Techniques 1 and 2 are notprerequisites.Assessment will be based on participation and a practical examination.MUSI3013. III.11 Directed study (6 credits)This is a one-to-one course in which the student works with a supervisor throughout the year. During thefirst semester, the supervisor introduces theories and techniques <strong>of</strong> musical research through reading,discussion, and book reports. Towards the end <strong>of</strong> the semester, a research topic is to be decided uponbetween the student and supervisor. <strong>The</strong> second semester is devoted to the research on the topic and thewriting <strong>of</strong> a thesis under the guidance <strong>of</strong> the supervisor. Entry to this course is on the basis <strong>of</strong> gradesobtained in second year and is at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> Department.Assessment will be based on the thesis submitted.
