At the Journalism and Media StudiesCentre (JMSC), we believe that the best preparation for careers in journalism is a strong liberal artseducation coupled with hands-on journalism training, including practical internship at newsorganizations. Students interested in a career in journalism would benefit from journalism courses butthey should major in subjects in the arts, social sciences and the sciences. Students should also honetheir language skills in English and Chinese, written and spoken, Cantonese and Putonghua.Second and Third YearsJMSC0002.News reporting and writing workshop (6 credits)Training in basic reporting and writing skills through lectures and intensive in-class and out-<strong>of</strong>-classassignments that replicate newsroom situations. Students will learn to write clearly, concisely andaccurately for the news media under deadline pressure.Prerequisite: JMSC0003 unless exempted by the instructor.Assessment: 100% by coursework.JMSC0003.Exploring careers in journalism and the news media (6 credits)An overview <strong>of</strong> issues in the practice <strong>of</strong> journalism and the news media. Through lectures and seminars,students explore how journalists collect, process and deliver information, what makes news, and theinner-workings <strong>of</strong> media organizations.Assessment: 100% coursework.JMSC0015.Cinema and the city (6 credits)Through a wide range <strong>of</strong> international films, including <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> films, the course will examine howcinematic images allow us to experience and understand the events that transform the contemporarycity.Assessment: 100% coursework.
