214JAPN2008.Translation I (Japanese into English) (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This language intensive course aims to provide students with skills in translating Japanese texts intoEnglish. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to analyse Japanese sentences in detail andtranslate them accurately into idiomatic English. We start with simple texts which are chosen todemonstrate a variety <strong>of</strong> sentence structures, and gradually we progress to more complicated texts,dealing with topics studied in some <strong>of</strong> the content courses. Various types <strong>of</strong> special vocabulary andstyle will be introduced as the course progresses. Students will be expected to prepare for class byworking on the texts before coming to class. <strong>The</strong>re will be a number <strong>of</strong> written assignments in whichthe students will have to analyse sentence structures and prepare written translations <strong>of</strong> short texts.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examination.Examination: A two-hour written examination at the end <strong>of</strong> the second semester.Prerequisite: Japanese language I or Japanese language II(a).Corequisite: Japanese language II or Japanese language III(a).JAPN2009.Translation I (Chinese/Japanese, Japanese/Chinese) (6 credits)This language intensive course aims to provide students with basic skills in translating Japanese textsinto Chinese and vice versa. Students will translate short, simple texts, chosen to illustrate varioussentence patterns in Chinese and Japanese. Texts with more complex structures with a variety <strong>of</strong>vocabulary and style will gradually be introduced to build up students' skills. Students will befamiliarised with a number <strong>of</strong> reference tools useful in Chinese/Japanese translation and will use themin their work.Assessment: 70% coursework, 30% examination.Examination: A two-hour written examination at the end <strong>of</strong> the second semester.Corequisite: Japanese language II.Third YearJAPN2020.Japanese language II(a) (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This intermediate level Japanese language course is open to students who have successfully completedJapanese language I(a). <strong>The</strong> course provides further training in reading, writing, speaking andlistening Japanese and is designed to help students develop their linguistic and communicative skills inthe language.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examination.Examination: A two-hour written examination at the end <strong>of</strong> the second semester.Prerequisite: Japanese language I(a).JAPN3001.Japanese language III (12 credits)This language course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> Japanese language II, and again <strong>of</strong>fers a balanced range <strong>of</strong>language skills, but with an additional emphasis on the applications <strong>of</strong> linguistic principles andmethodology, and on reading skills both general and specialized. <strong>The</strong> characteristic language patternsand terminology adopted in specific fields (e.g. literature, history, geography, etc. according toacademic specialization) are explored on a tutorial basis.Assessment: 70% coursework, 30% examination.Examination: A two-hour written examination at the end <strong>of</strong> the second semester.Prerequisite: Japanese language II.
