EUROPEAN STUDIES CORE COURSEEUST1001.Introduction to European Studies (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)<strong>The</strong> principal focus <strong>of</strong> this course will be the development <strong>of</strong> the 'idea <strong>of</strong> Europe' in a historical contextand more particularly the establishment and growth <strong>of</strong> the European Union during the late twentiethcentury. Using this focus the course will consider questions <strong>of</strong> broad interdisciplinary interest toprovide a strong foundation for students who wish to pursue a major in European Studies in their secondand third years. This course will also be <strong>of</strong> interest to students who do not wish to take the EuropeanStudies major but who would like to learn more about the role <strong>of</strong> the European Union in the twenty-firstcentury. Students planning to major in European Studies in their Second and Third years must take thiscourse as a pre-requisite.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examination.2. LANGUAGE CORE COURSESLANG1001.
