314PSYC0054.Human neuropsychology (6 credits)This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the neuro-anatomical and pathophysiological mechanisms <strong>of</strong> somecommon cognitive disorders neurological and/or neuropsychiatric in nature. Some examples <strong>of</strong> thesedisorders are brain tumors, cerebral vascular diseases, head injuries, dementia, and movement disorders.<strong>The</strong> neuropsychological and behavioral presentation <strong>of</strong> people suffering from these disorders will alsobe discussed.Assessment: 100% coursework.PSYC3001.<strong>The</strong>sis in psychology (6 credits)(For students taking 48 credits or more senior-level courses in Psychology.)Preferably an empirical investigation <strong>of</strong> a psychological problem chosen in consultation with asupervisor. <strong>The</strong> study should be complete in itself; for example it may consist <strong>of</strong> the replication <strong>of</strong> astudy done elsewhere in order to throw further light on the discussion by bringing in material which isavailable because <strong>of</strong> the particular situation in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>; or a basic investigation <strong>of</strong> a social orexperimental phenomenon which has attracted the attention <strong>of</strong> the investigator. <strong>The</strong> possibilities arelegion. Some formal instruction in preparing a research proposal may be <strong>of</strong>fered.Prerequisites: [PSYC1001 or (PSYC1002 & PSYC1003)] and PSYC0001 and PSYC0007.SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL ADMINISTRATIONFirst-year CourseSOWK1001.Introduction to social administration (6 credits)This is a basic course in the understanding <strong>of</strong> social policy in the areas <strong>of</strong> human resources planning andeducation, land use and housing, ageing and social security, family and support services, etc.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.Second- or Third-year CoursesSOWK0054.Gender and society - a policy perspective (6 credits)Men and women's experience <strong>of</strong> the social world is significantly different but gender as a socialconstruct is frequently overlooked both in academic discourse and in policy planning arenas. Gendereffects are clear in health, education, employment, housing, social security provision, political activityand family (both in terms <strong>of</strong> private relations and family policy). This course will examine the differenttheories <strong>of</strong> gender discrimination, the consequent effects on social, economic and political life andattempt to answer the question 'what is to be done about it?'SOWK0012.Social welfare in China (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> course explores the philosophies, organization, techniques and development <strong>of</strong> social welfareprovision in China. <strong>The</strong> work <strong>of</strong> service organizations such as the Civil Affairs Bureau, Street Offices,Trade Unions, Federation <strong>of</strong> Women, and the Communist Youth League will be studied. Issuesconcerning social security, youth policy, women's status and child care, the care <strong>of</strong> the elderly, thephysically and mentally handicapped and pr<strong>of</strong>essional training will be reviewed.
