242Swedish CoursesFirst YearLANG1023.Swedish for beginners - Part I (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course is for beginners <strong>of</strong> Swedish and will introduce the students to the essentials <strong>of</strong> the Swedishlanguage through a communicative approach. <strong>The</strong> course will cover speaking, listening, reading andwriting but with emphasis on speaking. Students will learn how to interact in everyday situations suchas shopping, taking the bus, asking for directions, making a phone call etc. Apart from using textbooks,additional classroom materials, such as videos, and other audio-visuals will be used.<strong>The</strong> course will also give students an insight to Swedish culture and society. Since Sweden, Norwayand Denmark are closely related in culture and language, the course will also give a widerunderstanding <strong>of</strong> Scandinavia.Assessment: 100% coursework. Coursework includes: (i) progress tests, (ii) participation in class, andassignments.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.LANG1024.Swedish for beginners - Part II (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> Swedish for beginners I. Pre-requisite for Swedish for beginners II:Swedish for beginners I.Assessment: 100% coursework. Coursework includes: (i) progress tests, (ii) participation in class, and(iii) assignments.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the second semester.Second YearLANG2023.Swedish II (12 credits)This course is taught throughout the year and is a continuation <strong>of</strong> Swedish for beginners – Part II.<strong>The</strong> intention is to build further on the junior level work and widen the scope <strong>of</strong> exposure to morecomplex aspects <strong>of</strong> the language. <strong>The</strong> teaching will diversify through the use <strong>of</strong> more elaborate materialand a variety <strong>of</strong> teaching techniques including work with video. Participants are expected toconsolidate their understanding <strong>of</strong> Swedish language and develop further their production and receptionskills.Prerequisites: Students wishing to be admitted to Swedish II will be required to attend an intensivesession (Transition 1) usually held in June.Students wishing to be admitted to Swedish II without having previously completedSwedish for beginners – Part II and Transition 1 will be required to satisfy the FacultyBoard through the Director <strong>of</strong> the Language Centre that they have attained elsewhere therequired standard.Assessment: One examination and a coursework element which shall count 60% and 40% respectively<strong>of</strong> the final grade awarded.Examination: <strong>The</strong> examination for Swedish II consists <strong>of</strong> one written paper <strong>of</strong> 2-hour duration and aseparate oral examination.Coursework may include the following: (i) periodic assignments; (ii) progress tests; and (iii) othercoursework as prescribed, such as long essays, translations, directed reading, etc.
