Prerequisite: German I.1 or comparable level acquired elsewhere. Students wishing to be admitted toGerman I.2 without having enrolled in German I.1 previously will have to satisfy theFaculty Board through the Director of the Language Centre that they have attainedelsewhere a standard adequate to enable them to complete the course satisfactorily.Examination: The Examination for German I.2 consists of one written paper of two hours' duration, anoral examination and a coursework assessment element.Assessment: Coursework shall count 40% of the grade awarded for the paper taken in the Examination:German I.2. Coursework includes: (i) progress tests; (ii) participation in class; and (iii)assignments.This course will be offered in the second semester.233Second YearLANG2004.Deutsch II.1 (German II.1 ) (12 credits)This course is taught throughout the year and builds on the first year work. It offers a balanced range ofthe various language skills through further syntax acquisition; reading and text analysis, listeningcomprehension, composition, oral expression and communicative skills. A wide variety of teachingtechniques is used. Small tutorial groups are arranged throughout the year to ensure maximumopportunities for interactive practice. All students continuing their studies in the third year are stronglyencouraged to attend a summer intensive immersion course in Germany.Prerequisites: German I.2 or comparable level acquired elsewhere. Students will practise written translations from German toChinese using a variety of texts written in different styles. The main aim will be to make students awareof the major structural differences between German and Chinese and to provide them with additionalinformation on contemporary German topics.Prerequisites: German I.2 or comparable level acquired elsewhere. Students wishing to be admitted toTranslation Exercise without having enrolled in German I.2 previously will have tosatisfy the Faculty Board through the Director of the Language Centre that they haveattained elsewhere a standard adequate to enable them to complete the coursesatisfactorily. Students may not enrol in Translation Exercise without enrolling inGerman II.1 unless they have previously attained a standard adequate to enable them tocomplete the course satisfactorily.Examination: The Examination for this course consists of one three-hour paper and a courseworkassessment element.Assessment: Coursework assessment shall count 40% of the grade awarded for Translation Exercise.Coursework may include the following: (i) periodic translation assignments; and (ii)progress tests.
