180GEOG2020.Geography <strong>of</strong> wine # (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)<strong>The</strong>re is an intimate relationship between geography and wine - where a wine comes from determinesits quality, style and taste. This is principally because <strong>of</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> the site and size <strong>of</strong> thevineyard, its soil, slope, rainfall, sunshine; as well as the nature <strong>of</strong> the cultivation practices, choice <strong>of</strong>grape and methods <strong>of</strong> winemaking. This course first examines the history and evolution <strong>of</strong> winemakingand the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> the art and science <strong>of</strong> oenology to provide the student with a firm foundationfor understanding the differences among the wide variety <strong>of</strong> wines produced worldwide. <strong>The</strong> remainderis dedicated to exploring the different wine regions <strong>of</strong> the world and the unique characteristics <strong>of</strong> eachwhich give their products their distinctive features.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.GEOG2021.Physical environment <strong>of</strong> China (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)<strong>The</strong> course firstly provides an explanation <strong>of</strong> basic natural environmental elements <strong>of</strong> China. Based onunderstanding and distribution <strong>of</strong> these elements, Chinese physical environment is then regionalizedand the individual environmental regions are discussed in detail. <strong>The</strong> course also involves utilizationand transformation <strong>of</strong> natural environment since ancient time. Major environmental problems indifferent regions will be discussed.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the second semester.GEOG2022.Methodological issues in geography (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> intent <strong>of</strong> this course is to guide students through the process <strong>of</strong> identifying, and developing aresearch/dissertation proposal. Weekly course meetings are intended to facilitate successful pursuit <strong>of</strong>research/dissertation work. <strong>The</strong> course is structured to step through the process <strong>of</strong> developing aresearch topic in a manner that insures development <strong>of</strong> a defendable research proposal. <strong>The</strong> primarytangible objective <strong>of</strong> the course is the production and defense <strong>of</strong> a research pre-proposal. <strong>The</strong> subject <strong>of</strong>this pre-proposal is to be identified preferably in consultation with each participant's formal supervisor.Each participant will then pursue the necessary steps to evolve the knowledge needed to defend thisproposal.Assessment: 60% project, 40% coursework.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.# = Course to be <strong>of</strong>fered in biennial odd year, i.e. in 2003-04, 2005-06 and so on.
