189GEOG2070.Coast and slope environments * (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)<strong>The</strong> course brings together material vital to any attempts to understand and manage our coasts andslopes and will be <strong>of</strong> interest to all those concerned with the environments and their management. <strong>The</strong>aim <strong>of</strong> the course is to develop a basic understanding <strong>of</strong> coast and slope management system. Itinvolves a basic study on the natural processes, including their landscape formation and evolution, andthe physical, ecological and cultural systems <strong>of</strong> slopes and coasts. <strong>The</strong> current issues and problems incoastal and slope areas will be discussed, such as landslide, coastal erosion and land reclamation. <strong>The</strong>management methodology in the areas will be introduced with focus on <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> and regional cases.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.GEOG2072.Environmental management: impact assessment (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)<strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to discuss the role <strong>of</strong> Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies inenvironmental decision-making process and as a means for better environmental management. <strong>The</strong>major components, processes, and attributes to EIA systems will be discussed throughout the lectures.<strong>The</strong> course will also introduce different methodologies in planning and managing <strong>of</strong> an EIA study.Applications <strong>of</strong> EIA system in the local context will be discussed in detail and illustrated by real-lifeexamples mainly from <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.GEOG2073.Principles <strong>of</strong> environmental management # (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)<strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to highlight some major aspects in environmental decision-making and toprovide means for better environmental management. <strong>The</strong> course will introduce a range <strong>of</strong> conceptsand methods in studying environmental management. <strong>The</strong> major components, processes, and attributesto environmental management process will be discussed in the course. <strong>The</strong> market and governmentregulations associated with environmental management will also be presented. Considering thecomplex and dynamic nature <strong>of</strong> the environmental management process, applications <strong>of</strong> environmental,social, and economic methods in environmental management are discussed in detail and illustrated byreal-life examples mainly from <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>, and mainland China.
