324SOCI0046.Sociology <strong>of</strong> law (6 credits)This course examines the interplay between law and society. It has a strong cross-cultural input,combining sociological, anthropological and historical materials. Students will be introduced tosociological theories <strong>of</strong> law, and to the theory and practice <strong>of</strong> law in socialist and liberal societies as wellas pre-industrial and developing societies. <strong>The</strong> course therefore covers the customary, common law andcodified legal systems and will examine the connection between legal institutions and social values.SOCI0047.Sociology <strong>of</strong> punishment (6 credits)This course deals with sociological and criminological theories <strong>of</strong> punishment. It will examine thehistorical and social context <strong>of</strong> punishment and look at the changing form <strong>of</strong> punishment in society.Students will be introduced to current debates on penal policy and corrections within the criminaljustice system.Prerequisite: None, but SOCI0057 recommended.SOCI0048.Sociology <strong>of</strong> sexuality (6 credits)This course examines how different cultures and sub-cultures construct their own categories <strong>of</strong> sexualdesire, sexual identity, eroticism and sexualities. It covers theories <strong>of</strong> sexuality, issues in the culturalconstruction <strong>of</strong> sexuality, practices <strong>of</strong> sexual diversity and media representations <strong>of</strong> sex.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.SOCI0049.<strong>The</strong> body and society (6 credits)This course examines the ways in which the human body embodies the key ideas and culturalassumptions in society. It also looks at how major political, social and personal problems are expressedthrough the body.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.SOCI0050.<strong>The</strong> city and social policy (6 credits)An examination <strong>of</strong> the distinctive experiences, life-styles and problems <strong>of</strong> people who live in cities.SOCI0052.Traditional Chinese society (6 credits)This course deals with the sociological significance and methodology <strong>of</strong> the study <strong>of</strong> Chinese society.<strong>The</strong> theme is social integration - how social order was attained in the late imperial period, and how thatorder disintegrated after the Western impact. Important institutions such as family and kinship, socialstratification and mobility, rural and urban organizations, central and local government, religion andother belief systems will be discussed.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.SOCI0053.Youth and youth culture (6 credits)This course explores issues such as the discovery <strong>of</strong> childhood and adolescence, the development andexpressions <strong>of</strong> youth culture in different societies including the United States, Britain, Japan, Canada, aswell as youth cultures in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.
