142ECON3802/FINA3602. Dissertation (12 credits)Candidates may write a dissertation under the supervision <strong>of</strong> a lecturer(s). Topics <strong>of</strong>fered may varyfrom year to year, depending on the research interests <strong>of</strong> the staff. A satisfactory dissertation may be<strong>of</strong>fered in lieu <strong>of</strong> two papers in the Examination.Candidates must submit the titles and outlines <strong>of</strong> their dissertations for approval by the Head <strong>of</strong> theSchool not later than January 1 <strong>of</strong> the semester VI <strong>of</strong> the curriculum, and the dissertations, which shouldnot exceed 20,000 words in length, shall be completed and presented not later than May 31 <strong>of</strong> thatacademic year.Prerequisites: ECON2101 or ECON2113 and ECON2102 or ECON2114.(Note: <strong>The</strong> course extends over two semesters.)Assessment: project paper 100%.ENGLISH<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> English gives teaching and supervision in English and American literatures, worldliterature in English, sociolinguistics, critical linguistics, and English language and linguistics. <strong>The</strong>Department <strong>of</strong>fers a major in English Studies in the second and third years. Students who major inEnglish Studies must select a minimum <strong>of</strong> eight six-credit courses (or equivalent) in English.<strong>The</strong> first-year English courses, ENGL1007 and ENGL1008, are normally open to students with grades<strong>of</strong> A, B, or C in the Use <strong>of</strong> English Examination. Students intending to enrol in English courses in Year2 and Year 3 must normally have completed at least one Year 1 course and achieved a satisfactory result.Students intending to MAJOR in English in Year 2 and 3 must have completed both Year 1 courses andachieved satisfactory results. Students with less than a C range average in their first year Englishcourses, or with an unsatisfactory report from their tutor, will not normally be permitted to major inEnglish.At the end <strong>of</strong> the students' first or second year, the Department will invite a small number to be SpecialHonours English Majors. Selected on the basis <strong>of</strong> their academic record and tutors' recommendations,these students will take at least 6 credits in English annually beyond the normal requirement for anEnglish major and will be guaranteed admission to the courses <strong>of</strong> their choice. In their final year theywill register for the tutorial course, Advanced Topics in English Studies (ENGL3032). Uponcompleting their programme and meeting the Special Honours requirements, these students will begiven special recognition by the Department.Regular attendance at tutorials and other classes and the punctual completion <strong>of</strong> work prescribed by thestudent's tutor or supervisor are expected.Choice <strong>of</strong> courses and options is subject to the approval <strong>of</strong> the department. Students must ensure thattheir choice <strong>of</strong> courses conforms to any prerequisites laid down by the department.Prescribed reading, specifications for each course, recommended course combinations, and informationabout prerequisites are available in the department handbook and the websitehttp://www.hku.hk/english.First YearENGL1007.Introduction to English Studies I (9 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to first year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)This course introduces students to English literature and linguistics.Prerequisite for <strong>BA</strong> students for Introduction to English Studies II.
