310PSYC0030.Computational models <strong>of</strong> behaviour (6 credits)An advanced course that explores some areas <strong>of</strong> psychological research where computational modelscan usefully be developed. Computer models that are constrained by neurobiological data can helpreveal how networks <strong>of</strong> neurones subserve perception and behaviour. Detailed attention will be given tocomputational analysis <strong>of</strong> problems in biological sensing, motor control, and perception.Computational models <strong>of</strong> human visual perception, in particular David Marr’s seminal work, will alsobe discussed.PSYC0032.Engineering psychology (6 credits)This course examines how knowledge in experimental/cognitive psychology is applied to the design <strong>of</strong>man-machine interface, tools, games, consumer products, etc. Students will appreciate how betterdesigns lead to positive outcomes such as higher user satisfaction, lower accident rate, and lower jobstress. Topics include human skills, motor theory, human-computer interaction, safety and health, workdesign, attention and performance. Most recent psychological studies on advanced technologies suchas virtual reality and three-dimensional displays will be introduced. Students will also learn from sitevisits how such designs are implemented in real settings.Assessment: 80% coursework, 20% examination.PSYC0033.Industrial psychology (6 credits)This course surveys the application <strong>of</strong> psychological principles and methods to the analysis <strong>of</strong> thecomplex relationships that exist between people and their work. Topics include job analysis, personnelselection, personnel training, vocational guidance, work evaluation, occupational stress, and errors.Assessment: 60% coursework, 40% examination.Prerequisites: PSYC1001 or (PSYC1002 & PSYC1003).PSYC0034.Introduction to abnormal psychology (6 credits)This course will provide a broad exposure to both theory and practice in abnormal psychology. It is afoundation course in mental health, counseling and other psychological services. Also it will provide theinformation and understanding required to make informed decisions about how to cope with the manysocial problems connected with mental disorders. A wide array <strong>of</strong> types <strong>of</strong> mental disorders will beexamined. Important themes will be emphasized such as the continuum in behaviour from mental healthto mental illness, the diathesis-stress and nature-nurture models and epidemiology.Assessment: 70% coursework, 30% examination.PSYC0035.Introduction to educational psychology (6 credits)This course focuses on how psychological theories are applied to learning, teaching, and facilitation <strong>of</strong>human growth. <strong>The</strong> topics include major developmental theories and their application to learning andinstruction, learning theories from both behavioral and cognitive traditions, effective teaching methodsand practices, learners' individual and group differences, achievement motivation, and assessment.Students will be involved in learning activities that require self-reflection and integration <strong>of</strong> daily lifeexperience.Assessment: 100% coursework.
