193GEOG3029.World urbanization: trends and policies (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> course examines the divergent forces shaping urbanization and growth <strong>of</strong> different parts <strong>of</strong> theworld and the responses <strong>of</strong> various national governments to such dynamics and their consequences. Itwill cover the uni-dimensional and multi-dimensional schools, world city concept, the extendedmetropolitan region and exo-urbanization. It provides a good foundation for advanced and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalstudies in human geography, planning and social sciences in general.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.ExaminationEach course will be examined by a two-hour paper except those courses which are assessed by 100%coursework. In addition to the formal written examination, some courses may also involve practicaland/or oral examinations.HISTORYCourses in the Department are open both to B.A. students who wish to major in History and to otherstudents in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> who are not taking, or intending to take, History as a major. Studentsfrom the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Social Sciences and other faculties are also welcome in most courses <strong>of</strong>fered by theDepartment, and an A-Level examination result in History is not a prerequisite for any first-year course.First year students intending to major in History are required to take a minimum <strong>of</strong> 12 credit units inhistory. Students normally take HIST1006. Foundations <strong>of</strong> the modern world: <strong>The</strong> West in thenineteenth century and HIST1011. Foundations <strong>of</strong> the modern world: Qing China. Studentsintending to major in History may also take HIST1004. Workshop in historical research, but this isnot a prerequisite for the major. <strong>The</strong>y may also take HIST1003. Information technology forhistorical studies, which satisfies the <strong>University</strong>'s IT requirement.In addition to the two foundation courses, there are four other first year courses which may be <strong>of</strong>fered:HIST1008. <strong>The</strong> world at war, HIST1009. <strong>The</strong> twentieth-century world, HIST1010. Anintroduction to European history and civilisation and HIST1012. From imperial to colonial:nineteenth century <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>.First-year CoursesHIST1003.Information technology for historical studies (3 credits)This course will satisfy the requirements for the Information Technology component <strong>of</strong> the first-yearcurriculum. Students will learn a range <strong>of</strong> information technology skills within the framework <strong>of</strong> thehistorical discipline and will consider how best to apply information technology developments bothcritically and creatively in the pursuit <strong>of</strong> their historical studies. Students will be exposed to a variety <strong>of</strong>learning situations, including the web-based 'electronic textbook' which has been specially developedfor first-year History students.Assessment: 100% coursework.
