306PSYC0006.Psychology <strong>of</strong> adolescent development (6 credits)This course deals with developmental changes in adolescence, considered from a systems perspective,with the person, the environment, and behaviour interacting over time. Topics to be covered include:methodological issues in studying adolescent development; changes in adolescent cognitive andintellectual functioning and personality and social development in adolescence. <strong>The</strong> challenges <strong>of</strong> thisperiod <strong>of</strong> development will be a special focus and include gender issues and at risk behaviours.Assessment: 70% coursework, 30% examination.Prerequisites: [PSYC1001 or (PSYC1002 & PSYC1003)] and PSYC0009.PSYC0007.Cognitive psychology (6 credits)This course covers how humans learn to deal with information from the environment. Topics includevarious aspects <strong>of</strong> perception, memory, concept structure and learning, and thinking. Students will beinvolved in conducting experiments on cognitive functioning as part <strong>of</strong> the coursework.Prerequisite: PSYC1001 or PSYC1002.PSYC0008.Advanced cognitive psychology (6 credits)This course covers some recent approaches in the field <strong>of</strong> cognitive psychology. Topics may include thecognitive unconscious in perception and memory, conditioning versus cognitive learning in humans,neural networks and information processing, as well as other topics reflecting the interests <strong>of</strong> theteacher.Prerequisites: (PSYC1001 or PSYC1002) and PSYC0007.PSYC0009.Life-span developmental psychology (6 credits)This course provides an introduction to developmental psychology from a life-span perspective. <strong>The</strong>topics include: basic concepts and theories <strong>of</strong> human development; research methodology and issues inthe study <strong>of</strong> developmental change; biological, environmental and social influences on development;processes <strong>of</strong> physical development over the life-span; attachment and emotional development;development <strong>of</strong> perception, language, cognition and morality; development <strong>of</strong> personality and socialrelationships.Assessment: 70% coursework, 30% examination.PSYC0010.History and issues in psychology (6 credits)An examination <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the major issues and controversies in the history <strong>of</strong> psychology which areimportant for the current debate and its continuation.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examination.Prerequisite: PSYC1001 or (PSYC1002 & PSYC1003).PSYC0011.Brain and behaviour (6 credits)Research in physiological psychology has led to an increased understanding <strong>of</strong> how the brain isinvolved in the psychology <strong>of</strong> everyday behaviour. This course will address the basic mechanismsunderlying the psychology <strong>of</strong> human behaviour and experience, starting with the assumption that allfundamental psychological processes have a physiological basis. <strong>The</strong> course further examines the casefor a psychology based on studies <strong>of</strong> brain-behaviour relationships. Special topics <strong>of</strong> study will dependupon student interests, but may include memory and learning, perception, attention and states <strong>of</strong>awareness, consciousness, meditation, sleep and dreaming, emotions, psychopathology. A knowledge<strong>of</strong> biology at HKCEE level is required for this course.Prerequisite: PSYC1001 or PSYC1002.
