This course will focuson issues <strong>of</strong> current or special interest and will be <strong>of</strong>fered to European Studies majors. Students will berequired to undertake extensive reading and participate in seminar presentations.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examination.EUST3003.European Studies dissertation (12 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadening purposes.)Students in this course will be expected to submit a written dissertation based on research into an aspect<strong>of</strong> European culture.Assessment: 100% coursework.FINE ARTS<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Fine <strong>Arts</strong> teaches the history and theory <strong>of</strong> art. European, American, Chinese andJapanese artistic traditions are all examined in depth, and the broader international context <strong>of</strong> art makingis also considered. An introduction to museum studies is also <strong>of</strong>fered. Students may major in Fine <strong>Arts</strong>,but will also discover many fruitful combinations between Fine <strong>Arts</strong> courses and those <strong>of</strong> other <strong>Arts</strong> andSocial Science disciplines.Prospective majors in Fine <strong>Arts</strong> must select not less than 48 credits from among those courses <strong>of</strong>feredby the Department in the second and third years, and must take in their final year at least one <strong>of</strong> thefollowing third year courses: FINE3001, FINE3005 or FINE3006. <strong>The</strong>se students must also normallyhave taken FINE1001 and FINE1004 in their first year. Prospective majors who have only taken one <strong>of</strong>these courses in their first year will normally be required to take either FINE2001 or FINE2002 in theirsecond year, however, these courses will not count towards the 48 credits required <strong>of</strong> all majors in thesecond and third years.
