141Third-year CoursesECON3505.Project evaluation (6 credits)This course covers the economic evaluation <strong>of</strong> projects from a public sector viewpoint usingmicroeconomic tools. It explores the normative aspects <strong>of</strong> evaluating public projects and policies, themeasurement <strong>of</strong> welfare change and public investment criteria, and employs basic financial analysis.Economic and financial evaluation <strong>of</strong> government projects and Build-Operate-Transfer infrastructureprojects (so-called BOT projects) will be discussed.Assessment: coursework 40%, examination 60%.FINA3806.Risk management (6 credits)This course introduces students to (1) the use <strong>of</strong> insurance in business and (2) corporate financial riskmanagement. Topics include insurance contract analysis, life and health insurance, property andliability insurance, pensions, identifying and measuring financial risk, and managing financial riskusing forwards, futures, swaps, options, and innovations such as caps, floors, collars, break and rangeforwards, and swaptions.Prerequisites: FINA0302 and FINA2802.Assessment: coursework 40%, examination 60%.FINA3807.Special topics in finance (6 credits)This course covers current developments in finance. Possible topics include security trading andmarket making, venture analysis, financial contracting, investment strategies for local markets andother current issues in finance. <strong>The</strong> exact topic to be <strong>of</strong>fered will be determined by instructors.Prerequisites: FINA0302 and FINA2802.Assessment: coursework 40%, examination 60%.ECON3801.Reading course (6 credits)This course consists <strong>of</strong> supervised reading and written work. Candidates may specialize in one topicunder the supervision <strong>of</strong> a lecturer(s). Examples <strong>of</strong> topics are: the problem <strong>of</strong> social cost, investment inhuman capital, general equilibrium theory, empirical methods in international trade, internationalmonetary relations, theories <strong>of</strong> saving and the East Asian economies, and current economic problems <strong>of</strong><strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>.An original project paper is required in lieu <strong>of</strong> a written paper in the Examination. It shall not exceed10,000 words in length, and must be completed and presented not later than May 31 <strong>of</strong> semester VI <strong>of</strong>the curriculum. Candidates shall submit a statement that the project papers represent their own work (orin the case <strong>of</strong> joint work, a statement countersigned by their co-worker(s), which shows the degree <strong>of</strong>their works) undertaken after the registration in the course.Prerequisites: ECON2101 or ECON2113 and ECON2102 or ECON2114.Assessment: project paper 100%.FINA3601.Reading course (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> course consists <strong>of</strong> supervised reading and written work.
