Choices are subject toapproval by the head <strong>of</strong> the department.MATHEMATICS<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Mathematics has two broad aims. <strong>The</strong> first is to give students a formal education inthe different fields <strong>of</strong> mathematics so that the students may develop an appreciation <strong>of</strong> mathematicsboth as a subject in its own right, as well as one that has far-reaching applications. <strong>The</strong> second is toprepare students for graduate study, for the teaching <strong>of</strong> mathematics in the school, and for positions inbusiness, industry and other areas which require a good grounding in mathematics. Teaching is given inlectures, example classes and tutorials. <strong>The</strong>re will be regular assignments and term tests.CoursesFirst YearMATH0801.Basic mathematics I (6 credits)To provide students with a basic background <strong>of</strong> calculus that can be applied in various disciplines,aiming at students not having done much mathematics beyond HKCEE mathematics. It can be followedby MATH0802/1803 or MATH1811/1812.Contents:• Sets, real numbers.• Equations and inequalities.• Functions, graphs and inverses.• Exponential and logarithmic functions.
