240Spanish CoursesFirst YearLANG1010.Spanish I.1 (6 credits)This course is intended for complete beginners in Spanish and does not require any previous knowledge<strong>of</strong> the language. Participants will acquire a basic knowledge in the four areas <strong>of</strong> competence (listening,speaking, reading and writing) with a particular emphasis on communicative skills.Prerequisite: Nil.Assessment: 100% coursework. Includes: (i) progress tests, (ii) participation in class and (iii) variousassignments.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.LANG1011.Spanish I.2 (6 credits)This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> Spanish I.1. It will further develop the four areas <strong>of</strong> competence withthe view <strong>of</strong> expanding students' linguistic, pronunciation and communicative skills. Participants will beasked to make use <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> materials available in the Centre's self-access facilities (which includeaudio, video, CD Rom and computer programmes), as well as to take advantage <strong>of</strong> resources accessiblethrough Internet.Prerequisite: Students must have satisfactorily completed Spanish I.1 or provide evidence that theyhave attained a comparable level elsewhere.Assessment: 100% coursework.Coursework assessment for this course includes (i) progress tests, (ii) participation in class, (iii) variousassignments, and (iv) an oral test.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the second semester.Second YearLANG2011.Spanish II (12 credits)This course is taught throughout the year and is a continuation <strong>of</strong> Spanish I.2. <strong>The</strong> course builds furtheron the first year's work and widens the scope <strong>of</strong> exposure to more complex aspects <strong>of</strong> the language. <strong>The</strong>teaching will diversify through the use <strong>of</strong> more elaborate material and a variety <strong>of</strong> teaching techniquesincluding work with video. Participants are expected to consolidate their understanding <strong>of</strong> Spanish anddevelop further their production and reception skills.Prerequisites: Students wishing to be admitted to Spanish II will be required to attend an intensivesession (Transition 1) usually held in June and/or September.Students wishing to be admitted to Spanish II without having previously completedSpanish I.2 and Transition 1 will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board through theDirector <strong>of</strong> the Language Centre that they have attained elsewhere the required standard.Assessment: <strong>The</strong> examination and coursework elements count 60% and 40% respectively.Examination: <strong>The</strong> examination for Spanish II consists <strong>of</strong> one written paper <strong>of</strong> 2-hour duration and aseparate oral examination.Coursework may include the following: (i) periodic assignments; (ii) progress tests; and (iii) othercoursework as prescribed, such as long essays, translations, directed reading, etc.
