118CLIT2004.Modern European drama: drama, carnival and comedy (6 credits)In this course, which continues from the first Drama course, and which thinks <strong>of</strong> 'modern drama' aslinked with the history <strong>of</strong> the modern subject from the sixteenth-century onwards, we examine texts byShakespeare, Aphra Behn and Moliere, Brecht, Beckett, and Heiner Muller to look at ways in whichdrama contests the single subject position.CLIT2005.Literary and cultural theory I (6 credits)This course is aimed at introducing some basic concepts <strong>of</strong> contemporary Western literary and culturaltheory. We will examine the postmodern polemics against truth and objectivity, and see how this isrelated to our reading <strong>of</strong> literary and cultural texts.CLIT2006.Literary and cultural theory II (6 credits)This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> CLIT2005.CLIT2007.Film culture I (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course focuses on the construction <strong>of</strong> meaning in cinema and the development <strong>of</strong> film language. Itfirst investigates the major structural components <strong>of</strong> the narrative film text, such as narrative structure,mise-en-scène, the camera eye, editing and sound, then proceeds to introduce the major cinematicmovements in film history and discuss some film classics in relation to the topics covered.CLIT2008.Film culture II (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course seeks to investigate critical methodologies for reading film texts with a particular emphasison psychoanalytic, feminist, and postcolonial theories. <strong>The</strong> approach will be cross-cultural andinter-disciplinary. Film texts will be examined in relation to questions <strong>of</strong> gender, sexual difference,sexuality, and subjectivity. <strong>The</strong> films to be examined may include some Hollywood classics as well asAsian melodramas.CLIT2013.Feminist cultural studies I (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course introduces students to the writings <strong>of</strong> some major contemporary feminists and their criticalanalysis <strong>of</strong> the construction <strong>of</strong> the images and roles <strong>of</strong> women. Cross-cultural materials taken from bothprint and non-print media will be used to illustrate feminist issues.CLIT2014.Feminist cultural studies II (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)Using cross-cultural materials, this course explores the relation <strong>of</strong> women to popular culturalproductions and practices such as shopping, reading gossip columns, romantic fiction and films, TVsoap opera and others.
