271MUSI2026. II/III.7 Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> music composition (6 credits)This course seeks to provide an understanding <strong>of</strong> various musical techniques through writing music. Itcovers topics in notation, instrumentation, melodic writing, harmonization, timbral control, expansionand refinement <strong>of</strong> raw material, and structural design. <strong>The</strong> course comprises lectures, small-grouptutorials, individual supervision, composer/performer workshops and concert performances <strong>of</strong> studentworks.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (100%).MUSI2027. II/III.8 Composing for the concert world (6 credits)This course encourages students to write music using 20th century techniques. It introduces students toorganizing and manipulating various musical parameters such as pitch, rhythm, meter, texture, color,form, etc. It also helps students to experiment with the incorporation <strong>of</strong> extra-musical inspiration andalternative aesthetics. Prerequisite: students must have completed the course Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> MusicComposition before undertaking this course.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (100%).MUSI2013. II/III.9 Computer and electronic music (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course provides the students with a general knowledge <strong>of</strong> acoustics, sampling, sound design, soundediting, sampling, sound recording and mixing, audio-visual synchronisation, synthesiser techniquesand MIDI sequencing. <strong>The</strong> course comprises lectures, workshops, and individual studio exercises.Students are required to produce various practical, creative projects using the Music Department'sstudio equipment and computer programs.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).MUSI2028. II/III.10 <strong>The</strong> business <strong>of</strong> music (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course introduces students to topics in the music industry, such as marketing, finance, contractagreements, and copyright problems in the fields <strong>of</strong> music publishing, recording, performance, musicadministration and arts management. A music and/or writing background is helpful, but is notnecessary.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (50%) and an examination (50%).MUSI2015. II/III.11 Popular music: from Cantopop to techno (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course covers popular music ranging from the history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>'s Cantopop (e.g.,Sam Hui, Aaron Kwok, Faye Wong) to the latest trends in the popular music market worldwide.<strong>The</strong> subject matter <strong>of</strong> this course is how popular music is defined, produced, disseminated andconsumed across different cultures <strong>of</strong> the world. Classes are not arranged chronologically toprovide a historical survey, nor are all areas <strong>of</strong> the world covered. However, themes andconcepts that can be applied to the serious study <strong>of</strong> all popular musics (and perhaps even more)will be discussed. Students will learn the basic critical tools to examine popular musics <strong>of</strong> theworld from a scholarly perspective.Assessment will be on the basis <strong>of</strong> coursework (100%).
