288PHIL2085.Contemporary European philosophy (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)<strong>The</strong> contents <strong>of</strong> this course will vary from year to year, but it is likely to cover various importanttwentieth century thinkers (these may include Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Foucault, Derrida) and/ormajor movements in twentieth century European thought (such as phenomenology, existentialism,structuralism and poststructuralism). Details will be announced in good time in the departmentalbooklet 'Choices in Philosophy'.Assessment: 100% coursework (may include in-class test).Courses <strong>of</strong> unspecified categoryPHIL2700.Special topic (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> level <strong>of</strong> courses <strong>of</strong>fered under this heading will be announced in the departmental BookletChoices in Philosophy.PHIL3810.Senior seminar (6 credits)This course will focus each year on a different key philosophical text. Presentations will be made bystudents and discussed according to a schedule worked out in advance between students and the courseco-ordinator. Selected third-year students will be included. An MPhil candidate who took this courseas an undergraduate will be deemed to have completed this graduate requirement.Assessment: 100% coursework.This is a third-level course, and is normally <strong>of</strong>fered every year. Permission to attend it will begiven to those students with good second year grades.PHIL3910.Senior thesis (12 credits)A thesis may be prepared under supervision for submission not later than March 31 <strong>of</strong> the final year.Notice <strong>of</strong> intention to <strong>of</strong>fer a thesis must be given before June 15 <strong>of</strong> the second year, and this intentionwill be confirmed or modified on the supervisor's advice by the end <strong>of</strong> the first week <strong>of</strong> the first semester<strong>of</strong> the final year, after the candidate has had the opportunity to do and submit preliminary work over thesummer vacation. Only students majoring in philosophy may <strong>of</strong>fer a thesis.ASSESSMENTIn the case <strong>of</strong> the Senior thesis, assessment will be based entirely on the completed thesis.In those courses where students are required, or may opt, to be examined by dissertation, assessmentwill be based on their dissertation, and also, in some cases, on tutorial work preparatory to the writing <strong>of</strong>their dissertation. <strong>The</strong> completed dissertation will count for at least 75% <strong>of</strong> the final assessment.(Details will be given in the departmental booklet 'Choices in Philosophy'.)Programme in Linguistics and Philosophy<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Philosophy in collaboration with the Department <strong>of</strong> Linguistics <strong>of</strong>fers a major inLinguistics and Philosophy:
