186GEOG2054.Urban planning in practice in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)On the assumption that students would have some basic understanding <strong>of</strong> urban planning in general, orat least have interest in the work <strong>of</strong> the urban planning pr<strong>of</strong>ession, this course will discuss selectedaspects about urban planning in practice in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. It will first introduce the geographical andother factors affecting urban planning in this city. This will be followed by discussions on a number <strong>of</strong>specific issues which have significant influence on urban planning decisions in this territory -particularly population growth, housing problems, development density, changes in its economicstructure, and concerns about the environment. Two major urban planning topics will then be examined- new towns and urban renewal. <strong>The</strong> planning system, the planning legislation and implementationmechanism specially formulated for the <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> situation will be explained in some details. <strong>The</strong>course will end with glimpses into the future development <strong>of</strong> this territory.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the second semester.GEOG2055.Water resources and management * (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course is to provide an introduction to water as a resource and the drainage basin hydrologicalcycle. It begins with an introduction to water as a resource and the drainage basin hydrological cycle.<strong>The</strong> second part <strong>of</strong> the course focuses upon changing demand for water and explores possible solutionsto the water problem. <strong>The</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> man upon run<strong>of</strong>f and groundwater is studies. Finally, water qualityincluding pollution and its impact upon water supply is examined.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the second semester.GEOG2056.Tourism and the shrinking world (6 credits)(This course is also <strong>of</strong>fered to second and third year non-<strong>BA</strong> students for inter-Faculty broadeningpurposes.)This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the tourism system in the global context. With abalanced coverage <strong>of</strong> the whole range <strong>of</strong> components within the tourism industry, it explores all aspects<strong>of</strong> both the private and public businesses related to tourism, such as theories, planning, environmentalconcerns, operations, and the interrelationships among the many tourism businesses. <strong>The</strong> materialcovered is intended to <strong>of</strong>fer students knowledge <strong>of</strong> the tourism system, enable them to apply basictourism concepts to various projects and problems, and help them to develop a career in the tourismindustry.Assessment: 40% coursework, 60% examination.This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the first semester.* = Course to be <strong>of</strong>fered in biennial even year, i.e. in 2002-03, 2004-05 and so on.
