PSYCHOLOGY OF SEXmentary roots in infancy, simply as a physical pleasure,without erotic imagery, as the satisfaction of an unknownand indeterminate organic need, certainly of sexual nature,but appearingto consciousness more like the actionof scratching a sensory surface that itches, though thepsychic condiment of forbidden fruit may be added to itsenjoyment.The act is gradually complicated by psychicelements and genuinely erotic stimuli which slowly approximateit to an act of coitus with an hallucinatorymate, and it thus passes almost insensibly into adult sexuallove, so disappearing, or else in a more retarded way whichvaries with the individual. Its elements, however, such asthose that are fetichistic, are retained, by arrest of development,as Venturi states (following Lombroso and inaccordance with the views of today), to constitute -whatin adult age, when carried so far as to replace the normalaim of sex, is described as a perversion. As Freud subsequentlyexpressed it: "Perverted sexuality is nothing butinfantile sexuality"; that is to say what is normal in thechild may become abnormal when it occurs in the adult.Masturbation, thus, Venturi concludes, far from beingthe vice combated by teachers and moralists, is "the naturalpassage by which is reached the warm and generouslove of youth and later the calm and positive matrimoniallove of maturity.1 'BIBLIOGRAPHYA.
