HOMOSEXUALITYverted, but this isby no means invariably the case, andeven inverts who appear to be such congenitally sometimeshave normal dreams, just asnormal persons occasionallyhave homosexual dreams.The satisfaction of the inverted sexual impulse iseffected in a variety of ways. Among my cases nearlytwenty per cent had never had any kind of sexual relationship.In thirty to thirty-five per cent the sexual relationshiprarely goes beyond close contact, or at mostmutual masturbation. In the others inter-crural connectionor occasionally fellatio is the method practiced. Inwoman gratification is obtained by kissing, close contact,mutual masturbation, and in some cases cunnilinctus,which isusually active rather than passive. The proportionof male inverts who desire pcedicatio (more often activethan passive) is not large. Hirschfeld places it at eight percent cases; I have found it to be nearer fifteen per cent.In male inverts there is a frequent tendency to approximateto the feminine type and in female inverts to themasculine type; this occurs both in physical and in psychicrespects, and though it may be traced in a considerablenumber of respects it isby no means always obtrusive.Some male inverts, however, insist on their masculinity,feel more like a man or like a woman. Amongwhile many others are quite unable to say whether theyfemale inverts,there is usually some approximation to the masculineattitude and temperament though this isby no meansalways conspicuous. Various minor anomalies of structureor function may occur in inverts. The sexual organs inboth sexes are sometimes overdeveloped or, perhaps moreusually, underdeveloped, in a slight approximation to theinfantile type; gynecomastyis at times observed; in womenthere may be a somewhat masculine developmentof thelarynx, as well as some degree of hypertrichosis.
