In 34 per cent, of cases theytended to occur very soon after sexual intercourse. Innumerous cases they were peculiarly frequent (even threein one night) during courtship, when the young man wasin the habit of kissing and caressing his betrothed, butthey ceased after marriage. It was not noted that positionin bed or a full bladder exerted any marked influencein the occurrence of erotic dreams; repletion of the seminalvesicles isregardedas the main factor.It has been noted by many (Lowenfeld, etc.) thatpeople seldom dream erotically of the persons whom theyare in love with, even after falling asleep thinking of thebeloved. This has been attributed, no doubt rightly, tothe exhaustion and repose of the acute emotion duringsleep; it is well known, also, that we seldom dream of thegriefs of the day though veryoften of its trivial details.It has also been noted by many (Stanley Hall, etc.)thatin erotic dreams, not only individuals who are quite indifferentto the dreamer when awake, but very triflingpersonal details or imagined contacts, will suffice to produceorgasm.The diagnostic value of sexual dreams, as an indicationof the sexual nature of the subject when awake, has beenemphasized by various writers (Moll, Nacke, etc.). Sexualdreams tend to reproduce, and even to accentuate, thosecharacteristics which make the strongest sexual appeal tothe subject when awake. At the same time, thisgeneralstatement has to be qualified, more especially as regardsinverted dreams. In the first place, a young man, howevernormal, who is not familiar with the feminine body whenawake, is not likely to see it when asleep, even in dreams
