HOMOSEXUALITYis an encyclopedia of the whole subject. In Italy, wherethe term "inversione sessuale" seems tohave originated,cases were from an early period brought forward by Ritti,Tamassia, Lombroso, and others. In France, where Charcotand Magnan first took up this study in 1882, a seriesof distinguished investigators, including Fere, S&ieux,and Saint-Paul (writing under the pen-name of "Dr.Laupts") have elucidated our knowledge of sexual inversion.In Russia Tarnowsky first investigated the phenomena.In England, John Addington Symonds, son of a distinguishedphysician and himself a brilliant man of letters,privately published two notable pamphlets, one on sexualinversion in ancient Greece and another on the modernproblem of homosexuality, Edward Carpenter (also atfirst privately) printed a pamphlet on die subject andlater a book (first published in German) on The IntermediateSex. Raffalovich published a notable book inFrench, and my own book on sexual inversion was publishedfirst in Germany (Das Kontrdre GeschlechtsgefilhL1896) and then in England and America, where also, at,an earlier date, Kiernan and Lydston had given attentionto the facts and theory of sexual inversion. The mostnotable recent book (1932) is Maran6n's, translated fromthe Spanish.The amount of study lately devoted to the subject hasnot yet resulted in complete unanimity. The first and mostfundamental difficulty lay in deciding whether sexual inversionis congenital or acquired. The prevailing opinion,before Krafft-Ebing's influence began to be felt, was thathomosexuality is acquired, that it is, indeed, simply a"vice," generally the mere result of masturbation or sexualexcesses having produced impotence in normal coitus, orelse (with Binet and Schrenck-Notzing)that it is theresult of suggestion in early life.Krafft-Ebing accepted
