THE BIOLOGY OF SEXthat sexual feeling isincreased before, during, and aftermenstruation. Kossmann advised intercourse just aftermenstruation, or even during the latter days of the flow,as the period when it is most needed. Guyot said that theeight days after menstruation are the period of sexualdesire in women. Harry Campbell, who investigated theperiodicity of sexual desire in healthy women of the workingclasses by inquiries made of their husbands who werepatients at a London Hospital, found that in two-thirdsof the wives, desire was increased before, during or afterthe flow, or at all three times. We now possess the results of inquiries on a more definitelystatistical basis. Modesty, however, tends to overlap thatperiod, as we should expect with an impulse which isactive during the greater part of the year, and combineswith the sexual impulse, constituting coquetry; then thef SS 1
