There is no doubt that in a slight degree,and occasionally in a marked degree, theystill exist, butthey are unimportant, though many years ago Weil andothers have sought to demonstrate the presence of slightbut measurable physical differentia of congenital origin inthe homosexual. Apart from such measurable differences,there can be little doubt that certain individuals, in organicconstitution, and probably as a result of unusualhormonic balance, possess a special aptitude to experienceTheresexual satisfaction with persons of their own sex.are a larger number, as is well known, presumably normal,both in Man and among lower animals, who when deprivedof the presence of individuals of the opposite sexcan find temporary sexual satisfaction in their own sex.It may seem hazardous to assert that every individual ismade up of mixed masculine and feminine elements,variously combined, and that the male invert is a personwith an unusual proportion of female elements, the femaleinvert a person with an unusual proportion of male elements;it is a schematic view which will scarcely accountaltogether for the phenomena. But when we put asideoccasional homosexuality in presumably normal persons,we seem justified in looking upon inversion as a con-an anom-genital anomalyor, to speak more accurately,aly based on congenital conditions which if it is pathological,is only so in Virchow's sense that pathology is thescience not of diseases but of anomalies, so that an invertedperson may be as healthy as a color-blind person.[228]
