Some authorities regarddetumescence in women as accomplished in the pouringout of secretions, others in the rhythmic genital contractions,especially at the cervix of the womb. The sexualparts may, however, be copiously bathed in mucus for anindefinitely long period before the final stage of detumescenceis achieved, and the rhythmic contractions arealso taking place at a somewhat early period; in neitherrespect is there necessarily any obvious increase at thefinal moment of orgasm. In women this would seem to bemore conspicuously a nervous manifestation than in men.On the subjective side it ispronounced, with its feelingof relieved tension and agreeable repose, but on the objectiveside the culminating moment is often less easy todefine, and is not invariably, as it tends to be in men, ageneral motor convulsion.The active part played by the womb in detumescencecan no longer be questioned, but it must not be tooassumed that the belief in the active movements ofmust therefore be denied. If it is correct,hastily the spermatozoaas some authorities believe, that the spermatozoa may retaintheir full activity in the female organs even for a weekor more (though this is disputed) they have ample time toexert their energies.
