Nine-tenths of the foreignbodies found in the female vagina and urethra are due tomasturbation. The age at which they are found is chieflybetween seventeen and thirty. Hairpins have been foundin the female bladder with special frequency, because theuretha is normally a highly erogenous sexual center andtends to "swallow" what is introduced into it, while theshape of the hair-pin (which used to be the implementmost easily available to a woman in bed) specially lendsitself to disappearance in this way.Another class of objects used for masturbation does notcome under the surgeon's notice: the external objectswith which the sexual region may be brought in contact.The garments worn, chairs, tables, and other articles offurniture come under this head. Reference may also bemade to the sexual excitement which may occur, accidentallyor intentionally, in the gymnasium (as in climbingpoles) or when riding, or cycling, or using the' treadle,sewing-machine, or by the influence of tight-lacing. Noneof these sources of exercise or compression,it must beadded, is necessarily a cause of sexual excitement.This group of forms of auto-erotic excitement mergesinto the form of thigh-friction, by which the more or lessvoluntary pressure and friction of the thighs is brought tobear on the sexual region. This is sometimes practiced bymen and is fairly common among women. It is even foundin female infants. It is a widespread practice,and in somecountries (as Sweden)it is stated to be the commonestform of masturbation in women.
