In women, who havebecome accustomed to sexual intercourse, erotic dreamsof fully developed character occur, with complete orgasmand accompanying relief as may occasionally be the casein women who are not acquainted with actual intercourse;some women, however, even when familiar withactual coitus, find that sexual dreams, though accom*panied by emissions, are only the symptom of desire anddo not producerelief.One of the most interesting and important charactersby which the erotic dreams of women and, indeed, theirdreams generally differ from those of men is in thetendency to evoke a repercussion on the waking life, atendency more rarely noted in men's erotic dreams, andthen only to a minor extent. This is common, even inhealthy and normal women, and isexaggerated in neuroticsubjects, by whom the dream may even be interpretedas a reality, and so declared on oath, a fact ofpractical importance, since it may lead to unfoundedaccusations of assault under anesthesia.The tendency of the auto-erotic phenomena of sleep tobe manifested with such energy as to flow over into thewaking life, and influence conscious emotion and action,is especially seen in hysterical women, in whom it has,therefore, chiefly been studied.
