Until recent years any scientific occupationwith sex was usually held to indicate, if not avicious taste, at all events an unwholesome tendency. Atthe present time it isamong the upholders of personaland public morality that the workers in sexual psychologyand the advocates of sexual hygiene find the warmestsupport.It can scarcely be said that until lately the medicalprofession has taken an active partin the extension ofthis movement. The pioneers, indeed at first, nearly acentury ago, in Germany and Austria, and later in othercountries have been physicians, but they were oftenlooked at askance by their colleagues.
