Here' weencounter a symbolism mainly founded on association byresemblance; the animal sexual act recalls the humansexual act; the animal becomes the symbol of the humanbeing.The group of phenomena we are here concerned withincludes several sub-divisions. There is, first, the more orless sexual pleasure sometimes experienced, especially byyoung persons, in the sight of copulating animals. Thishas been termed Mixoscopic Zoophilia;it falls within theof normal variation. Then we have the cases inrangewhich the contact of animals, stroking, etc., producessexual excitement or gratification; this is a sexual fetichismin the narrow sense, and isby KrafEt-Ebing termedZoophilia Erotica. We have, further, the class of cases inwhich a real or simulated sexual intercourse with animalsis desired. Such cases do not involve fetichism in thenarrow sense, but they come within the sphere of eroticsymbolism, as here understood. This class falls into twodivisions: one in which the individual is fairly normal,but belongs to a low grade of culture; the other in whichhe may belong to a more refined social class, but a psychopathiccondition is present.
