It is a conception which has assumed ratherdifferent shapes at the hands of different psychologists ofsex, so that a brief sketch of its history may be desirable.Forty years ago it had no definite existence for science,though long clearly traceable in fiction and poetry, whileits central situation was symbolized in classic Greek daysby the figure of Narcissus. Here and there, indeed, psychiatristsnoted such a condition as a symptom in individualcases, but in 1898, when first putting forward a sketch (inthe Alienist and Neurologist] of auto-erotism, I concludedby describing, with a case, as its extreme form, the Narcissus-liketendency sometimes found, more especiallyperhaps in women, for the sexual emotions to be absorbed,and often entirely lost, in self-admiration.
