So that, of all the great sensory fields,thefield of touch is at once the least intellectual and themost massively emotional. These qualities,as well as itsintimate and primitive association \\ith the apparatus oftumescence and detumescence, make touch the readiestand most powerful channel by which the sexual spheremay be reached.As we might expect, touch is frequently predominant inthe courtship of the lower animals. Touch determinesmating among Crabs and Crayfish and is usually the chiefsexual sense for Spiders. In Cattle, Deer, Horses, Dogs,etc., licking is an important part of courtship. Neumann,who watched Elephants love-making, observed that the
