HOMOSEXUALITYless common thanhomosexuality appears to be scarcelyamong men, in this respect unlike nearly all other aberrations;the pronounced cases are, indeed, perhaps lessfrequently met with than among men, but less markedand lessdeeply rooted cases are probably more frequentthan among men. Some professions show a higher proportion of inverts than others. Inversion is not specially prevalent among scientific and medical men; it is more fre>quent among literary and artistic people, and in the dramaticprofession it is often found. It is also specially commonamong hairdressers, waiters, and waitresses* Artisticaptitude of one kind or another, and a love of music, arefound among a large proportion of educated inverts, inmy experience as much as sixty-eight per cent.In America among the educated and professional classes,M. W. Peck among 60 college men in Boston, representingall departments of the University and College life, found7 who were definitely homosexual, six of them admittingadult overt experiences. Two others were clearly thoughunconsciously homosexual; he considers that 10 per centcollege men are homosexual, whether or not there areovert practices. G. V. Hamilton found that only 44 of his100 married men could deny all memory of homosexualplay in early life; while 46 men and 23 women owned tofriendship with their own sex involving stimulation ofthe sexual organs. Katharine Davis found that 31.7 percent women admitted "intense emotional relations withother women," and 57.5 per cent unmarried women admittedhomosexual play in childhood, 48.2? per cent ofthem droppingit after adolescence.The importance of homosexuality is, again, shown bythe prevalence of homosexual prostitution.
