That would seem toindicate that while in married men it ismainly due toabsence from home, or other extraneous cause, in marriedwomen it expresses the greater incidence on them of dissatisfactionin marriage. It is further to be noted that afar larger proportion of men than of women consider thatthe practice has been physically or mentally injurious.Hamilton was the only investigator of the three whowas able to approach directly the question of the relativesatisfaction in marriage experienced by husbands andwives, since his husbands and wives were comparable,equal in number and investigated in precisely the samemanner. He made fourteen grades of satisfaction in marriage,and when the results were tabulated itthat 51 per cent of the husbands had attained to the seventhhighest degree of satisfaction, but only 45 per cent,was foundof the wives. The women, taken as a group, had beenmore seriously disappointed in their marriages than hadthe men. Katharine Davis confirmed this, though onlyable to make the comparison indirectly, by finding that thewives reported a larger proportion of husbands who weresatisfied by marriage than they themselves showed.
