SEXUAL DEVIATIONments. Licht, the historian of sexual manifestations inGreece, has pointed out the rarity of sexual perversions(homosexuality not being so regarded but as a normalsupplement to marriage) in Greece. The reason was, heremarks, that for the Greeks sexual matters were outsidemorals (except where children or violence were involved) ,which was concerned only with injustice, offenses againstthe State, and crimes. Where normal relationships arefree, variations are not artificially fostered, and, if theyoccur, tend to pass unperceived. "It may sound paradoxical,but it is true," Wolbarst states, "that the spread ofsexual perversion in American communities in recentyears has been very largely fostered and abetted, unwittinglyof course, by moral agencies."We cannot expect or desire to return to Greek morality,and its ideal of "the beautiful alike in body and soul"may be out of our reach. But there can be little doubtthat we shall gradually break down the false notions andthe rigid attempts at legal and social prohibitions whichhave caused so much trouble and confusion in the sexualhistory of our recent past.
