THE ART OF LOVEbe double. In partit is due to the irradiation of the sexualinstinct through the whole organism, taking longer nervouscircuits and suffusing regions which are outside thesexual sphere so long as the sexual impulse attains its endsspeedily and without impediments. In partit is due tofusion with other psychic elements of a more or less alliedcharacter. At an early stage after full sexual development love isreinforced by the allied emotions derived from the relationshipof parents to offspring. The woman's sexual loveis thereafter mingled with the tenderness and patiencewhich have been evoked by her children, and a man'swith the guarding and protecting elements involved inthe paternal relationship. Sexual love thus becomes, inmarriage, part of the structure of society, while in someof its highest manifestations it may be allied with theimpulses of religion and the impulses of art. In thiswomen seem often to have been pioneers. Letourneaupointed out that in various parts of the world womenhave taken a leading part in creating erotic poetry, andsometimes seem even to have monopolized the emotionof love. In this connection itmay be mentioned thatamong primitive peoples suicide from erotic motives seemsto occur chiefly among women. It must, however, be remembered that the evolution oflove from lust has proceeded but a little way among manylower human races, and is indeed rudimentary among alarge number of persons in civilization. While 'lust" isknown all over the world, and there are everywhere wordsto designate it, "love" is not universally known, and inmany languages there are no words for "love." The failuresto find love are often remarkable and unexpected. We may also find it where we least expect it. Sexual desirebecame "idealized" even by some animals, especially birds,[3*5]
