A Study <strong>of</strong> the Use <strong>of</strong> Ubiquitous Mobile Digital Devices <strong>in</strong> Intercont<strong>in</strong>ental Distance Education<br />

Question 19 <strong>of</strong> the questionnaire was also a closed question which asked students about their<br />

personal usage habits <strong>and</strong> functions <strong>of</strong> their laptops, <strong>and</strong> the results are shown <strong>in</strong> the table<br />

below. The highest scores were for the <strong>in</strong>formation function, closely l<strong>in</strong>ked to education, with<br />

647 out <strong>of</strong> a possible 875, followed by education at 535. These two functions scored highly<br />

across all nations, the total be<strong>in</strong>g 4121 impacts over 3255 for mobile phones.<br />

Discussion <strong>and</strong> conclusions<br />

This designed, implemented <strong>and</strong> verified <strong>research</strong> work represents an <strong><strong>in</strong>novation</strong> that is <strong>of</strong><br />

social, family, academic, methodological <strong>and</strong> didactic <strong>in</strong>terest. The results show that the trend<br />

is more or less homogenous <strong>in</strong> all the countries surveyed, with some variations. These <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

economic factors, which are significant <strong>in</strong> Peru, which <strong>of</strong>ten makes it difficult to use the<br />

mobile phone to connect to the Internet due to relatively steep onl<strong>in</strong>e connection costs. Other<br />

cases <strong>in</strong>clude Spa<strong>in</strong>, where prolonged journeys on public transport means that students can<br />

use their mobile phones to do academic work, among other th<strong>in</strong>gs. Columbia is paradigmatic<br />

<strong>in</strong> that students <strong>of</strong>ten use corridor spaces at the faculty to connect to Internet <strong>and</strong> do course<br />

work, either by laptop or mobile phone.<br />

Empirical evidence shows that there is a duality between competences seen as necessary <strong>and</strong><br />

which are later put <strong>in</strong>to practice. We f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>new</strong> digital natives who underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tuitively how<br />

to operate these devices <strong>and</strong> who later, with time <strong>and</strong> practice, go on to acquire <strong>and</strong> apply<br />

such skills.<br />

The results reveal that there are three important tasks ahead: first, telecoms companies should<br />

help close the digital divide <strong>and</strong> promote the teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g functions <strong>of</strong> the modern<br />

ubiquitous mobile technologies by lower<strong>in</strong>g onl<strong>in</strong>e connection costs for students, especially <strong>in</strong><br />

those countries where such technologies are virtually the only tools available for access<strong>in</strong>g<br />

knowledge as books are costly <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> short supply. The leap forward <strong>in</strong>to the digital universe<br />

has been made but full access is still limited due to the high costs <strong>of</strong> connection, usage <strong>and</strong><br />

ma<strong>in</strong>tenance. Another drawback is low battery life; technology needs to develop longer-last<strong>in</strong>g<br />

batteries to <strong>in</strong>crease autonomy.<br />

Secondly, the grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly frequent use <strong>of</strong> mobile connected devices by students<br />

requires university teachers to post more curricular content on the faculty networks, not just<br />

course <strong>in</strong>formation. Although the onl<strong>in</strong>e swapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> course notes <strong>and</strong> collaborative works is<br />
