VIDEO IN HIGHER EDUCATION: EXAMINING GOOD PRACTICES<br />

Summary<br />
Currently Maastricht University is at the conclusive phase <strong>of</strong> a video project, aimed at creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
an <strong>in</strong>stitution wide video support service. One <strong>of</strong> the deliverables is collect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g<br />
good practices on the use <strong>of</strong> video <strong>in</strong> education. Good practices were collected by <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g<br />
support staff members at Dutch higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutes. Additional <strong>in</strong>formation was<br />
obta<strong>in</strong>ed from academic publications, SURF events <strong>and</strong> special national <strong>in</strong>terest groups on<br />
media <strong>in</strong> higher education (SURF is the collaborative ICT organisation for Dutch education<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>research</strong> – https://www.surf.nl/en/about-surf). A collection <strong>of</strong> these good practices are<br />
presented <strong>in</strong> this paper.<br />
As Maastricht University is a face to face university that uses a problem based learn<strong>in</strong>g (PBL)<br />
methodology, the section on didactics focuses on PBL <strong>in</strong> a face-to-face sett<strong>in</strong>g. Nevertheless,<br />
the collection <strong>of</strong> good practices presented, may be <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest to teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> support staff<br />
members <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the use <strong>of</strong> video <strong>in</strong> at any higher education <strong>in</strong>stitute.<br />
Before address<strong>in</strong>g good practices <strong>of</strong> video <strong>in</strong> education, the paper def<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> categorises<br />
video. Then a collection <strong>of</strong> good practices, is presented, divided <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong> four doma<strong>in</strong>s: (a)<br />
education, (b) layout (c) support, <strong>and</strong> (d) production. The section on education deals with<br />
flipp<strong>in</strong>g the classroom <strong>and</strong> other forms <strong>of</strong> blended learn<strong>in</strong>g. The practices presented <strong>in</strong> layout,<br />
support <strong>and</strong> production are applicable to most higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutes, both face to face<br />
<strong>and</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e. The goal <strong>of</strong> the paper is to <strong>in</strong>spire <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>form higher education teachers, support<br />
staff <strong>and</strong> managers.<br />
Introduction<br />
Over the last decades, video is play<strong>in</strong>g a more prom<strong>in</strong>ent role <strong>in</strong> higher education. To provide<br />
better support to teachers who wish to embed video <strong>in</strong>to their education, Maastricht<br />
University has started a video project aimed at creat<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>stitution wide video service, a<br />
project that is now <strong>in</strong> its conclusive phase. One <strong>of</strong> the project deliverables is a collection <strong>of</strong><br />
best practices on the use <strong>of</strong> video <strong>in</strong> higher education to be shared with stakeholders <strong>and</strong><br />
presented on the video web portal that is under construction at the time <strong>of</strong> this paper.<br />
Good practices were collected from <strong>in</strong>terviews with twenty-seven teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> support staff<br />
members <strong>of</strong> fourteen higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutes, as well as twenty-six staff members <strong>of</strong><br />
Maastricht University. In addition, members <strong>of</strong> the video project team gathered <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
