Figure 7 depicts graphically the important themes that emerged dur<strong>in</strong>g the period 2000 to<br />

2004. The emphasis <strong>of</strong> the <strong>research</strong> was rooted <strong>in</strong> the themes <strong>of</strong>, learn<strong>in</strong>g, students,<br />

<strong>in</strong>structional design <strong>and</strong> development. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this same period the articles <strong>in</strong> DE were<br />

concentrated around the theme <strong>of</strong> the emergence <strong>of</strong> the virtual university <strong>and</strong> this theme does<br />

not feature at all <strong>in</strong> the South African publications.<br />

From Figure 8 it can be observed that dur<strong>in</strong>g the period 2005 to 2009, themes around onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> e-learn<strong>in</strong>g as well as assessment started to emerge. Onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>teraction patterns<br />

appeared as the major topic for <strong>research</strong> <strong>in</strong> the same time frame <strong>in</strong> DE so the <strong>in</strong>ference can be<br />

drawn that DE <strong>research</strong>ers were at a more advanced stage <strong>of</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>research</strong> than their South<br />

African counterparts, although the South Africans were just enter<strong>in</strong>g the field.<br />
