Towards Design<strong>in</strong>g an Oxford Experience <strong>in</strong> an Onl<strong>in</strong>e Distance Program<br />

by a group <strong>of</strong> specialist academics from Oxford, as well as contributions from <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

experts. Each <strong>of</strong> the 8 course modules will <strong>in</strong>clude synchronous web<strong>in</strong>ars which will be<br />

scheduled to accommodate the different time zones <strong>of</strong> students on the course. The learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

model for the OPSM <strong>in</strong>cludes the follow<strong>in</strong>g methods <strong>and</strong> media:<br />

• Course websites <strong>in</strong> the LMS;<br />

• Read<strong>in</strong>g materials;<br />

• Pre-recorded lectures;<br />

• Weekly live web<strong>in</strong>ars;<br />

• Weekly onl<strong>in</strong>e discussions;<br />

• Onl<strong>in</strong>e quizzes;<br />

• Assessment: eight extended essays;<br />

• 1-week summer school;<br />

• Dissertation (MSc).<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g technologists are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g the portal <strong>and</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e courses on the<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutional LMS; at a later stage they will also be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> design<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>teractive simulations <strong>and</strong> animations which the subject matter lends itself to. The<br />

development team has tried hard to design a program that comes close to imitat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

personalized Oxford learn<strong>in</strong>g experience. This will be achieved through small student groups,<br />

moderated onl<strong>in</strong>e discussions, live web<strong>in</strong>ars <strong>and</strong> collaboration with subject specialists to<br />

reflect the most recent <strong>research</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs. A challenge was to organize the logistics <strong>of</strong> the<br />

program without prior experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>distance</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g courses. For example,<br />

time <strong>and</strong> effort were required to identify the best technologies <strong>and</strong> skills required to conduct<br />

synchronous sessions for students <strong>in</strong> extreme time zones.<br />

Methodology – the WISE project<br />

Central fund<strong>in</strong>g for the WebLearn Improved Student Experience (WISE) project enabled the<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>of</strong> two additional learn<strong>in</strong>g technologists to provide close support to a limited<br />

number <strong>of</strong> academic departments <strong>in</strong> reth<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> redesign<strong>in</strong>g their course materials <strong>in</strong> the<br />

LMS. The Oxford OPSM was one <strong>of</strong> the programmes identified to benefit from this dedicated<br />

support.<br />

The WISE project uses a design <strong>and</strong> development methodology consist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 5 stages:<br />

Gather<strong>in</strong>g requirements, Prototyp<strong>in</strong>g, Build<strong>in</strong>g, Launch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Evaluat<strong>in</strong>g (Figure 2).<br />
