It is not surpris<strong>in</strong>g that the themes <strong>of</strong> ODL <strong>and</strong> <strong>distance</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g were the most prom<strong>in</strong>ent,<br />

which were connected to Higher Education <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> South Africa, as this is the theme<br />

<strong>of</strong> the analysis <strong>of</strong> this <strong>research</strong>. In addition the themes <strong>of</strong> students, learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g also<br />

feature strongly. With<strong>in</strong> the student themes, l<strong>in</strong>ks are made with assessment, student support<br />

<strong>and</strong> experiences. A particular theme <strong>of</strong> Development was identified which is encourag<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

see as South Africa is seen as a develop<strong>in</strong>g country <strong>and</strong> the theme <strong>of</strong> development is a<br />

necessary one. Technologies, l<strong>in</strong>ked to e-learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g also emerged as<br />

prom<strong>in</strong>ent themes. The f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs tie <strong>in</strong> with the results obta<strong>in</strong>ed from the <strong>research</strong> levels <strong>and</strong><br />

areas analysis <strong>of</strong> Zawacki-Richter (2009) <strong>and</strong> presented <strong>in</strong> Table 7 above.<br />

Figures, 7, 8 <strong>and</strong> 9 display the results <strong>of</strong> the themes identified by Leximancer TM accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

the 3 time periods <strong>of</strong> 200-2004, 2005 to 2009 <strong>and</strong> 2010 to 2014.<br />
