Digital pedagogy<br />

Chang<strong>in</strong>g L<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>of</strong> the Lifelong Learn<strong>in</strong>g Innovation <strong>in</strong> Europe<br />

András Szűcs<br />

In the past decade, the environment <strong>of</strong> education has changed quickly, with astonish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

developments <strong>in</strong> the macro-factors <strong>of</strong> technology, globalization, <strong>and</strong> demography. For a long<br />

while, education has mostly been follow<strong>in</strong>g the content delivery <strong>and</strong> assessment model, with<br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> goal be<strong>in</strong>g the transmission <strong>of</strong> knowledge. In the digital age, technology is putt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more <strong>and</strong> more tools <strong>in</strong> the learners’ h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> education is becom<strong>in</strong>g a service focus<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

the learner, provid<strong>in</strong>g much more freedom than earlier.<br />

Rapid spread <strong>of</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g-edge technologies, resulted spectacular <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> dem<strong>and</strong> for them<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> their use. The chang<strong>in</strong>g notion <strong>of</strong> access, accompanied by the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g volume <strong>and</strong><br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g quality <strong>of</strong> digital content, <strong>and</strong> the radically transform<strong>in</strong>g habits <strong>and</strong> expectations <strong>of</strong><br />

users have engendered <strong>new</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretations concern<strong>in</strong>g several related concepts <strong>and</strong> have<br />

repositioned the social impact <strong>of</strong> ICTs <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

New stakeholder alliances emerged, supported by fresh social <strong>and</strong> economic dem<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong><br />

clusters <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terests. Open access movement, revolutionary sett<strong>in</strong>gs like MOOCs, atypical<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g solutions are active <strong>in</strong> transform<strong>in</strong>g the scene.<br />

The changes <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>formation society <strong>in</strong> the learn<strong>in</strong>g field have been happen<strong>in</strong>g meanwhile<br />

largely outside the <strong>in</strong>stitutional sett<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten along unexpected <strong>pathways</strong>. This was <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

accompanied by contradictions <strong>and</strong> provisionality.<br />

Among the pedagogic challenges raised by the social web, the issue <strong>of</strong> advanced onl<strong>in</strong>e course<br />

development, spontaneous knowledge management, is emerg<strong>in</strong>g. Tools are better affordable,<br />

access to networks easy, social media spontaneously exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g by the users<br />

creative scenarios rely<strong>in</strong>g on the exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g power <strong>of</strong> network<strong>in</strong>g. Students <strong>of</strong>ten use the social<br />

web very creatively <strong>and</strong> they build up wikis to replace LMS quickly. The digital modernization<br />

is actually just happen<strong>in</strong>g, progress<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the environment <strong>of</strong> the learners who are always<br />

ahead.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Siemens (2013), the massive recent <strong>and</strong> cumulated achievements <strong>of</strong> <strong>research</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> <strong>distance</strong> education have mostly been ignored. Pay<strong>in</strong>g attention to what is already<br />

known about learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> virtual spaces, to how the role <strong>of</strong> educators <strong>and</strong> learners is<br />

transformed <strong>and</strong> how social networks extend a learn<strong>in</strong>g network may enable ma<strong>in</strong>stream<br />

MOOC providers to make evidence-based decisions <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> educational reform.<br />

A potential example <strong>of</strong> breakthrough<br />

A possible way forward, comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the latest achievements <strong>of</strong> the digital learn<strong>in</strong>g – social<br />

media – massification – chang<strong>in</strong>g granularity <strong>of</strong> the learn<strong>in</strong>g elements can be illustrated by the<br />

recent EdX (non-pr<strong>of</strong>it onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g dest<strong>in</strong>ation founded by Harvard <strong>and</strong> MIT) <strong>in</strong>itiative.<br />

MicroMasters <strong>of</strong>fers promis<strong>in</strong>g example how a structurally <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>and</strong> disruptive <strong>in</strong>itiative<br />

may change the system. The program <strong>of</strong>fered by a group <strong>of</strong> reputable universities represents a<br />

<strong>new</strong> category <strong>of</strong> Master’s level onl<strong>in</strong>e education to bridge the knowledge gap between higher<br />

education <strong>and</strong> the workplace. The MicroMasters certificate as st<strong>and</strong>alone credential is<br />
