Video <strong>in</strong> Higher Education: Exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Good Practices<br />

Classification <strong>of</strong> videos accord<strong>in</strong>g to learn<strong>in</strong>g goals<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terviewees use video to remove transmission <strong>of</strong> knowledge (one-way<br />

communication) from their lecture hall or classroom, <strong>and</strong> enhance <strong>in</strong>teractivity dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

contact time. In this context, the term flipp<strong>in</strong>g the classroom is <strong>of</strong>ten used. Various best<br />

practices on education <strong>in</strong> this report, will deal with these learn<strong>in</strong>g goals <strong>in</strong> more depth.<br />

A taxonomy <strong>of</strong> videos accord<strong>in</strong>g to their learn<strong>in</strong>g goal (this list is not all <strong>in</strong>clusive):<br />

1. Introduction <strong>of</strong> a study or course (PR), faculty or course for potential students.<br />

2. Introduction <strong>of</strong> a course or assignment replaces <strong>in</strong>troductory lesson <strong>and</strong> partly replaces<br />

the syllabus.<br />

3. Skills clip, show how to perform a skill for <strong>in</strong>stance, before go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a skills lab; saves<br />

costly lab time.<br />

4. M<strong>in</strong>i-lecture (10-30 m<strong>in</strong>utes). The orig<strong>in</strong>al lecture is chopped up <strong>in</strong>to smaller lectures.<br />

5. Knowledge clip (2-5 m<strong>in</strong>utes) on a basic concept or on a difficult part <strong>of</strong> theory or on a<br />

step by step process (e.g. a complicated formula or sum). Often recorded by a tutor,<br />

teacher or an expert <strong>in</strong> the field.<br />
